TIMELINE: 24 hours before Cadet Dormitorio killed

4th Class Cadet Darwin Dormitorio was maltreated by his upperclassmen in the Philippine Military Academy which eventually led him to succumb to death. Here’s a timeline 24 hours before the poor cadet died.

SEPTEMBER 17

Between 6:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

Baguio City Police Chief Allen Rae Co said after their breakfast, Cadet 1st Class Axel Ray Sanupao summoned Dormitorio to his room to ask about the combat boots he entrusted the plebe.

When he was not able to produce it, Sanupao asked Dormitorio to fetch 3rd Class cadets Shalimar Imperial and Felix Lumbag in their room.

As the three returned to the room, Dormitorio was asked to do squat thrusts. However, according to accounts, the cadet was only able to carry out five counts of the exercise as he was already under extreme pain.

Dormitorio, following the suggestion of a first class cadet, rested on the bunk bed of 2nd class cadet. When the owner of the bed saw Dormitorio lying there, he dragged the plebe to the floor and kicked him several times.

9:15 a.m.

The senior cadets then rushed Dormitorio to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with urinary tract infection.

4:30 p.m.

He was discharged later that afternoon.

Between 4:30 p.m. and 11:59 pm.

An unnamed upperclassman visited Dormitorio in his room. The young cadet, who was resting at the time, was kicked on the head by his senior.

The plebe still joined regular activities of the cadets that evening.

But before midnight of September 17, Dormitorio was electrocuted in his private parts with a taser.

Co said the move may have served as the final blow for Dormitorio’s banged up body.

SEPTEMBER 18

4 a.m.

At around 3:45 in the morning, Dormitorio’s roommate attempted to wake him up. The plebe, however, was unresponsive.

He was then rushed to the hospital anew and was declared dead an hour later.

“If there’s any small consolation, sa pagte-trace po namin ng movements ni Cadet Dormitorio, napakalakas po ng batang ito, napakatibay ng loob at napakatibay ng katawan,” Co said.

[Translation: If there’s any small consolation, with how we traced Cadet Dormitorio’s movements, this kid was really strong and determined.]

Acting PMA Commandant of Cadets BGen. Romeo Brawner Jr. declared a war on hazing. He said he will scrutinize the implementation of the PMA Honor Code, which states, “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

“We really have to look into the honor system of the cadets, into its implementation. Honor system is a perfect system, but sometimes when it’s implemented, there are differences from the real objectives,” he told CNN Philippines on Friday.
