Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a Vice-President candidate, accused Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte for an undeclared wealth deposited in the Bank of Philippine Islands amounting to P211 million.
Trillanes accused the presidential frontrunner for not declaring the huge amount to his statement of assets, liabilities, and networth (SALN)
“I stand by my track record in exposing political pretenders like Mayor Duterte. I am now so motivated to make sure that he doesn’t become the president of our country” Trillanes said who also challenged Duterte to sue him for libel.
Duterte’s spokesperson Peter Laviña denied the accusation and said suing Trillanes would just be a waste of time.
“It’s part of the smear campaign being raised against the mayor especially right now. His opponents are practicing crab mentality, trying to him down with all these baseless accusations” Laviña said.
Duterte camps also said that since BPI’s name is being dragged by Trillanes, they will also seek legal advice from Duterte’s attorney if they need to ask BPI’s statement regarding the accusation.
“They have to issue a statement whether this is correct or not” Laviña said.
Duterte’s running mate, Sen.Alan Peter Cayetano hit back Trillanes describing him a ‘principled man who resorted to a cheap and shameful gimmick’.
“It’s a pitiful sight to see Senator Trillanes reduce himself from being a protector of the people to a ‘POEtector’ “, Cayetano said.
Last March 2016, only Mayor Duterte and Sen.Cayetano signed a manifesto to show the candidates’ bank accounts to the public.
